Gourmet

A century-old bento maker, Awajiya, and Kenmin Foods, known for its rice noodles, have joined forces to create the GF Hipparidako Bento—a gluten-free version of Kobe’s beloved octopus bento. With soy sauce free of wheat and a brand-new matte black ceramic pot, this special dish will be sold exclusively at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Tradition meets innovation in a meal that embodies Japan’s growing gluten-free movement.

A closer look at the GF Hipparidako Bento, made entirely gluten-free.

What sets the GF Hipparidako Bento apart is the commitment to using gluten-free soy sauce and seasoning it with authentic mirin and Japanese-style dashi broth. This results in a refined umami distinct from the original Hipparidako Bento.
The traditional octopus-pot container has also been reimagined: this version comes in a matte black ceramic vessel, giving the bento an elegant, high-end feel.

Kenmin Foods also operates the GF RAMEN LAB Osaka/Kansai Expo branch, where visitors can enjoy gluten-free ramen made without wheat but still boasting a rich, chewy texture.
The expertise cultivated through GF Ramen production was applied to the collaboration with Awajiya, giving birth to the GF Hipparidako Bento. Together, these dishes showcase how Expo 2025 is becoming a platform to share Japan’s latest innovations in gluten-free cuisine with the world.
