Ikuta Shrine, located in the heart of Sannomiya in Kobe, has unveiled its grand ema featuring the zodiac sign for 2026, Horse (Uma).
Every year, a massive zodiac ema is displayed in the shrine grounds at the end of December, becoming a beloved winter tradition at Ikuta Shrine.
The ema is also popular as a photo background for New Year’s cards and “Happy New Year” messages, with many visitors stopping to take commemorative photos.

Visiting Ikuta Shrine

Passing through the vibrant vermilion torii, visitors are welcomed by the serene atmosphere unique to Ikuta Shrine.
Despite being located in the center of Kobe, the shrine is surprisingly peaceful, and it draws many worshippers—especially during the New Year season.

The “Horse” Ema Displayed in Front of the Main Hall

The “Horse” (Uma) zodiac ema is installed in front of the main hall.

Known as a shrine for matchmaking and love, Ikuta Shrine attracts worshippers year-round.
Recently, more international visitors have also begun exploring this historic site.
The 2026 zodiac ema is displayed directly in front of the main hall, where visitors naturally stop to take pictures.

The 2026 Zodiac “Horse” — A Dynamic White Horse Running Through the Clouds

The grand ema depicts a white horse galloping powerfully above a sea of clouds.
Artist Koji Horie of Hyogo Nikikai began working on the piece in July, saying he poured a wish for a “strong and positive year ahead” into the running horse.
Measuring 3 meters wide and 2 meters tall, the ema creates an impressive presence beside the main hall.

On Display Until the End of January — A Must-See for New Year Visits

The ema will remain on display until the end of January 2026.
Many visitors enjoy photographing the zodiac character of the year for use in New Year’s cards, SNS greetings, or travel memories.
It’s a seasonal highlight unique to winter at Ikuta Shrine.

Nearest Station:

  • Sannomiya Station (JR / Hankyu / Hanshin / Subway)
    5–7 minutes on foot

How to get there from Sannomiya Station:

  1. Exit the station toward the north side (mountain side).

  2. Walk straight along the shopping streets toward Ikuta Road.

  3. The shrine entrance (vermilion torii) will appear on your left.

Travel Tip:
Ikuta Shrine is centrally located and easy to combine with nearby attractions such as Ikuta Road, Kitano Ijinkan, and Kobe’s downtown shopping areas.
