Wednesday-Only Experience: Authentic Indian Curry at Kobe’s Historic Indian Club

Gourmet

Hidden in Kobe’s Kitano district, the Indian Club—founded in 1904 as a gathering place for the city’s Indian community—opens its doors to the public only once a week, every Wednesday. On this special day, visitors can enjoy authentic Indian curry and freshly baked naan inside a venue that is usually reserved for members. It’s a rare chance to combine history, culture, and cuisine in one unforgettable lunch.

A Glimpse into Kobe’s Indian Heritage

The Indian Club has stood for more than a century as a symbol of Kobe’s multicultural exchange. Normally closed to non-members, the club welcomes everyone on Wednesdays only, transforming into a dining space filled with the aromas of Indian spices. This tradition makes Wednesday lunches a sought-after experience for both locals and travelers looking for something truly unique.

The Art of Naan Making

Stretching the dough by hand to form naan.

Part of the excitement is watching naan being crafted in real time. Dough portions are carefully stretched into their signature shape, then pressed against the inside wall of a tandoor oven heated to about 350°C (662°F).

Pressing the dough onto the wall of the tandoor oven.

Within seconds, the bread rises and blisters, creating an irresistible aroma. Less than two minutes later, it emerges golden and crisp, finished with a brush of melted butter—an authentic touch only possible with a tandoor.

Wednesday Curry Lunch Menu

The weekly lunch menu available only on Wednesdays.

Visitors can choose from three curries: chicken, lentil, or vegetable. Each has a distinct spice blend and depth of flavor. The menu offers several set options, including the “Classic Set” with one curry, naan, and rice, and the “Volume Set,” featuring two curries for those with a bigger appetite.

The Volume Set plate: two curries, naan, rice, and chai.

All meals are available only at Wednesday lunchtime, making the visit feel like a midweek culinary event.

The Classic Set plate: naan, curry, rice, and chai.

Every set ends with a cup of chai tea, offering a sweet, spiced balance after the richness of the curries. Combined with the club’s historic interior and calm atmosphere, the Wednesday-only lunch becomes more than just a meal—it’s a cultural and sensory journey.
